Published animal and early human work describes growth hormone release that is separated from comparable rises in adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol. Prolactin changes are reported as small in the same studies. Selectivity is attributed to binding at the ghrelin receptor and to the downstream signaling that follows, rather than to differences in how quickly the peptide is cleared. Authors commonly label the compound selective rather than potent, because the same mass produces a smaller growth hormone response than some older secretagogues tested in parallel. Whether that profile holds across species and routes of administration remains an open question.
Human data remain limited and come mainly from small, short-term studies conducted decades ago. The peptide has not received approval as a medicine from major regulators, so current availability is largely as a research chemical. Reported effects on growth hormone pulsatility, appetite, and body composition should be read as preliminary, since few independent groups have replicated the original findings. Analytical characterization of research-grade material varies between suppliers, which complicates comparison across studies. Regulatory status also differs by country, and some jurisdictions classify it as a prescription-only or otherwise restricted item.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that belongs to the growth hormone secretagogue class. It acts as an agonist at the ghrelin receptor, also called the growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1a. The compound was designed in the 1990s during a search for agents that release growth hormone with fewer off-target hormonal effects than earlier secretagogues. It appears in the research literature under several sequence-based names. Material supplied for laboratory work is normally a lyophilized solid, and it is not marketed as an approved therapeutic in major jurisdictions.
Structural features distinguish the molecule from earlier secretagogues. An alpha-aminoisobutyric acid residue near the N-terminus and a D-naphthylalanine substitution increase receptor affinity, while C-terminal amidation improves resistance to exopeptidases. These modifications are associated with reduced stimulation of appetite and of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis compared with hexarelin or growth hormone releasing peptide-6. Whether the same profile applies at every dose level studied is a matter of ongoing investigation rather than settled consensus.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that acts as an agonist at the ghrelin receptor, also called the growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1a. Its sequence incorporates non-natural residues, which slows enzymatic breakdown relative to short native peptides. In laboratory and early clinical work the compound is described as a selective growth hormone secretagogue because it raises growth hormone with comparatively little effect on other pituitary outputs. The degree to which that selectivity holds across species and dosing regimens remains an open question in the published literature.
Signal transduction begins when the peptide binds GHSR-1a on pituitary somatotrophs. The receptor couples to Gq/11 proteins, activating phospholipase C, which cleaves phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate into inositol trisphosphate and diacylglycerol. Inositol trisphosphate releases calcium from intracellular stores, and the resulting rise in cytosolic calcium drives growth hormone vesicle fusion. Concurrent Gs coupling and cyclic AMP elevation have also been reported, and the relative contribution of each arm to the overall secretory response is not fully settled.

Activity is mediated mainly through the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, now generally called the ghrelin receptor or GHS-R1a. Binding at this G-protein-coupled receptor triggers phospholipase C signaling, calcium mobilization, and release of growth hormone from pituitary somatotrophs. Reports describe less pronounced stimulation of adrenocorticotropic hormone and prolactin compared with earlier secretagogues such as hexarelin or GHRP-6. Selectivity figures vary between assay systems, so the degree of separation from other secretagogues is an area of ongoing comparison rather than a fixed constant.
In animal and early human studies, ipamorelin produces pulsatile growth hormone release and a secondary rise in insulin-like growth factor 1. The magnitude and duration of that rise depend on route, sampling schedule, and the baseline endocrine state of the subject. Whether repeated exposure alters the response over time is not firmly settled, since some reports describe stable pulsatility while others note attenuation. Most published data come from small samples, which limits the strength of any general claim about long-term behavior.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that belongs to the growth hormone secretagogue class of compounds. Its sequence is Aib-His-D-2-Nal-D-Phe-Lys-NH2, a structure that differs from natural ghrelin in length and in the presence of non-natural amino acid residues. Early laboratory work described it as a comparatively selective agent that stimulates growth hormone release with limited effect on other pituitary hormones. The compound is supplied as a lyophilized solid for research use and has no identified natural source in the body.
Ipamorelin is a synthetic pentapeptide that acts on the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, also known as the ghrelin receptor. Its sequence contains five amino acid residues, including a non-natural residue that increases stability against enzymatic breakdown. The compound was developed in the 1990s as part of research into small peptides that stimulate pituitary hormone release. Unlike larger protein hormones, it can be produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and characterized by standard analytical methods.
At the receptor level, ipamorelin binds GHS-R1a and triggers signaling through Gq-coupled pathways. Activation leads to calcium release and downstream effects in pituitary somatotroph cells. These events promote the release of growth hormone into circulation. The response depends on the presence of the receptor and on the physiological state of the animal or tissue studied. Because the receptor is also found in other tissues, effects beyond the pituitary have been examined in laboratory models, though the extent of those effects remains an area of ongoing study.
=== Specialized reactions === As with all carbonyl compounds, the protons on the α-carbon are labile due to keto–enol tautomerization. Thus, the α-carbon is easily halogenated in the Hell–Volhard–Zelinsky halogenation. The Schmidt reaction converts carboxylic acids to amines. Carboxylic acids are decarboxylated in the Hunsdiecker reaction. The Dakin–West reaction converts an amino acid to the corresponding amino ketone. In the Barbier–Wieland degradation, a carboxylic acid on an aliphatic chain having a simple methylene bridge at the alpha position can have the chain shortened by one carbon. The inverse procedure is the Arndt–Eistert synthesis, where an acid is converted into acyl halide, which is then reacted with diazomethane to give one additional methylene in the aliphatic chain. Many acids undergo oxidative decarboxylation. Enzymes that catalyze these reactions are known as carboxylases (EC 6.4.1) and decarboxylases (EC 4.1.1). Carboxylic acids are reduced to aldehydes via the ester and DIBAL, via the acid chloride in the Rosenmund reduction and via the thioester in the Fukuyama reduction. In ketonic decarboxylation carboxylic acids are converted to ketones. Organolithium reagents (>2 equiv) react with carboxylic acids to give a dilithium 1,1-diolate, a stable tetrahedral intermediate which decomposes to give a ketone upon acidic workup. The Kolbe electrolysis is an electrolytic, decarboxylative dimerization reaction. It gets rid of the carboxyl groups of two acid molecules, and joins the remaining fragments together.
=== Advancements in fluid flow analysis === Inviscid flow was further analyzed by various mathematicians (Jean le Rond d'Alembert, Joseph Louis Lagrange, Pierre-Simon Laplace, Siméon Denis Poisson) and viscous flow was explored by a multitude of engineers including Jean Léonard Marie Poiseuille and Gotthilf Hagen. Further mathematical justification was provided by Claude-Louis Navier and George Gabriel Stokes in the Navier–Stokes equations, and boundary layers were investigated (Ludwig Prandtl, Theodore von Kármán), while various scientists such as Osborne Reynolds, Andrey Kolmogorov, and Geoffrey Ingram Taylor advanced the understanding of fluid viscosity and turbulence.
The mechanism describing the formation of the ozone layer was described by British mathematician and geophysicist Sydney Chapman in 1930, and is known as the Chapman cycle or ozone–oxygen cycle. Molecular oxygen absorbs high energy sunlight in the UV-C region, at wavelengths shorter than about 240 nm. Radicals produced from the homolytically split oxygen molecules combine with molecular oxygen to form ozone. Ozone in turn is photolyzed much more rapidly than molecular oxygen as it has a stronger absorption that occurs at longer wavelengths, where the solar emission is more intense. Ozone (O3) photolysis produces O and O2. The oxygen atom product combines with atmospheric molecular oxygen to reform O3, releasing heat. The rapid photolysis and reformation of ozone heat the stratosphere, resulting in a temperature inversion. This increase of temperature with altitude is characteristic of the stratosphere; its resistance to vertical mixing means that it is stratified. Within the stratosphere temperatures increase with altitude (see temperature inversion); the top of the stratosphere has a temperature of about 270 K (−3°C or 26.6°F). This vertical stratification, with warmer layers above and cooler layers below, makes the stratosphere dynamically stable: there is no regular convection and associated turbulence in this part of the atmosphere. However, exceptionally energetic convection processes, such as volcanic eruption columns and overshooting tops in severe supercell thunderstorms, may carry convection into the stratosphere on a very local and temporary basis.

=== Social sciences === Finance: a retirement fund will decay exponentially being subject to discrete payout amounts, usually monthly, and an input subject to a continuous interest rate. A differential equation dA/dt = input − output can be written and solved to find the time to reach any amount A, remaining in the fund. In simple glottochronology, the (debatable) assumption of a constant decay rate in languages allows one to estimate the age of single languages. (To compute the time of split between two languages requires additional assumptions, independent of exponential decay).
==== Oil ==== Oil is generally a product of thermal breakdown of type I and type II kerogen during catagenesis. The HIC should reflect the source kerogen signal, generation fractionation, isotopic exchange and other maturation effects. Thermal maturation at the oil window can erase much of the HIC primary signals. The formation of oil involves breaking C-C and C-H bonds, resulting in depletion of 13C and 2H in the products and enrichment in the residual reactants due to KIEs. Yongchun Tang and his colleagues modeled this process based on laboratory-calibrated kinetics data and found that the frequency factor ratio for D/H is 1.07. Moreover, oil is also affected by isotope fractionation from phase changes. However, the behavior of oil gas-liquid fractionation differs from water as the vapor phase of oil is 2H-enriched. This depletes residual oil as it gets evaporated. Biodegradation of oil is also expected to fractionate hydrogen isotopes, as enzymatic breaking of C-H bond has a normal KIE. Several degradation experiments show that this fractionation is generally mild, ranging from −11‰ to −79‰. This process should also enrich partially degraded oil. Finally, oil stored in a reservoir often had migrated through subsurface (aka geochromatography) from another source region, interacting with water. No data has been published to confirm the fractionation associated with migration, yet theoretical prediction shows that this is likely to be very small. Many studies of natural samples have shown slight increases in δD with thermal maturity.
Both the PP and the PSOE refused to participate in the proposed dialogue under those conditions, which meant "the demise of the Ajuria Enea Mesa, which would never reconvene again." After the failure of the "Ardanza Plan", the PNV, EA and HB ─ and also the United Left of the Basque Country ─ signed the Treaty of Estella on September 12, 1998, and four days later ETA announced the indefinite cessation of violence. Thus, 1999 was the first year since 1971 without any deaths from ETA attacks, although the street violence of the kale borroka did not disappear. During the truce, the PP government even made contacts with the ETA leadership but maintained the idea expressed by Interior Minister Jaime Mayor Oreja that it was a "trap truce", that is, that ETA had proclaimed the cessation of violence only to reorganize itself after the hard police blows it had received. In November 1999, ETA announced the breaking of the truce due to the lack of progress in the Basque "process of national construction" and in January 2000 it perpetrated a new attack. Another of the "reasons" for ending the truce had been that neither the 1998 Basque Parliament elections nor the municipal and foral elections of June 1999 had resulted in an overwhelming victory of the parties supporting the "Lizarra Pact" against the "constitutionalist" parties.
Blood smear examination is usually performed in conjunction with a complete blood count in order to investigate abnormal results or confirm results that the automated analyzer has flagged as unreliable. Microscopic examination of the shape, size, and coloration of red blood cells is useful for determining the cause of anemia. Disorders such as iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell anemia, megaloblastic anemia and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia result in characteristic abnormalities on the blood film. The proportions of different types of white blood cells can be determined from the blood smear. This is known as a manual white blood cell differential. The white blood cell differential can reveal abnormalities in the proportions of white blood cell types, such as neutrophilia and eosinophilia, as well as the presence of abnormal cells such as the circulating blast cells seen in acute leukemia. Qualitative abnormalities of white blood cells, like toxic granulation, are also visible on the blood smear. Modern complete blood count analyzers can provide an automated white blood cell differential, but they have a limited ability to differentiate immature and abnormal cells, so manual examination of the blood smear is frequently indicated. Blood smear examination is the preferred diagnostic method for certain parasitic infections, such as malaria and babesiosis. Rarely, bacteria may be visible on the blood smear in patients with severe sepsis.

Shorter polysaccharides, with 3 to 10 monomers, are called oligosaccharides. A fluorescent indicator-displacement molecular imprinting sensor was developed for discriminating saccharides. It successfully discriminated three brands of orange juice beverage. The change in fluorescence intensity of the sensing films resulting is directly related to the saccharide concentration.
Elastin is a protein encoded by the ELN gene in humans and several other animals. Elastin is a key component in the extracellular matrix of gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates). It is highly elastic and present in connective tissue of the body to resume its shape after stretching or contracting. Elastin helps skin return to its original position when poked or pinched. Elastin is also in important load-bearing tissue of vertebrates and used in places where storage of mechanical energy is required.
== Cause == Scurvy, including subclinical scurvy, is caused by a deficiency of dietary vitamin C since the human liver is unable to synthesize vitamin C. Provided the diet contains sufficient vitamin C, the lack of working L-gulonolactone oxidase (GULO) enzyme has no significance. In modern Western societies, scurvy is seldom present in average adults, although underfed people (drug users, the homeless, neglected children and geriatrics) are affected. Virtually all commercially available baby formulas contain added vitamin C, preventing infantile scurvy. Human breast milk contains sufficient vitamin C if the mother has an adequate intake. Commercial milk is pasteurized, a heating process that destroys the natural vitamin C content of the milk. Scurvy is one of the accompanying diseases of malnutrition (other such micronutrient deficiencies are beriberi and pellagra) and thus is still widespread in areas of the world dependent on external food aid. Although rare, there are also documented cases of scurvy due to poor dietary choices by people living in industrialized nations.

It has not been approved as a therapeutic by major regulators, and the human trial record is small and dated. Material available today is mostly sold as a research chemical for laboratory use. Approval and restriction status varies by country.
It binds the ghrelin receptor, known as the growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1a. Activation of that receptor triggers signaling that leads to growth hormone release. Selectivity for growth hormone over cortisol and prolactin is the property most often cited for this compound.
Published estimates place the circulating half-life at roughly two hours in humans. Clearance involves peptidase activity and renal handling. Because the peptide is short-lived, release patterns after administration are usually described as pulsatile rather than sustained.
Both molecules activate the same receptor, GHSR-1a, but they share little sequence identity. Ghrelin is a 28-amino-acid hormone carrying a distinctive acyl modification, whereas ipamorelin is a short synthetic peptide. The shared target explains overlapping endocrine effects, while the different structures account for differences in metabolic stability and receptor selectivity.
